Finding Confidence Through God: My Journey from Trauma to Triumph

Hello, Dear Readers!

Today, I want to share a deeply personal story—one that’s shaped who I am today. It's a story of overcoming childhood trauma, dealing with PTSD and military sexual trauma, and ultimately finding confidence through God. Along the way, I've also navigated the challenges of marriage, raised three incredible daughters, and learned to live life confidently. My hope is that by sharing my journey, I can inspire others who may be facing similar battles.

1. Childhood Trauma and Finding Faith

My journey began with a tumultuous childhood. Growing up with a chauvinist and narcissistic father and a mother who was absent for 21 years of my life, I was thrust into a world of instability and emotional turmoil. To add to this, my stepmother failed to provide the nurturing environment my sister and I desperately needed, often leaving us to care for our half-brothers.

It was during these difficult times that I found solace in faith. Despite the chaos around me, I felt an unexplainable connection to God, a source of comfort and strength that I clung to in moments of despair. This early connection laid the foundation for the confidence and resilience I would develop later in life.

2. Military Life: Trials and Triumphs

Joining the Navy was a pivotal moment in my life. It offered me a chance to escape my past and build a new future. However, the military brought its own set of challenges. I faced the horrors of combat, experienced military sexual trauma, and struggled with PTSD. These experiences could have easily broken me, but they also became a crucible for my faith and inner strength.

Through it all, I leaned heavily on my faith. Philippians 4:13 became my mantra: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” This scripture reminded me that I was never alone and that God’s strength was sufficient to carry me through even the darkest of times.

3. Marriage and Motherhood: Balancing Acts

As a Navy spouse and mother of three girls, balancing family life with personal challenges has been a delicate act. Marriage is a partnership, but it’s also a journey that requires patience, understanding, and a lot of love. My husband and I have weathered many storms together, leaning on each other and on God to guide us.

Raising three daughters has been one of the most rewarding yet challenging aspects of my life. I strive to be a role model for them, showing them that confidence and strength come from within and from a deep relationship with God. We’ve had open conversations about my experiences, teaching them that vulnerability is not a weakness but a testament to true strength.

4. Building Confidence Through God

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is that confidence doesn’t come from external validation but from knowing who you are in God’s eyes. God sees us as His beloved children, worthy and capable of great things. Embracing this truth has transformed my self-perception and enabled me to face life’s challenges with unwavering confidence.

In moments of self-doubt, I turn to scriptures that affirm my worth and purpose. Jeremiah 29:11 is a constant reminder that God has a plan for my life—plans to prosper me and not to harm me, plans to give me hope and a future. These promises fuel my confidence and keep me grounded, no matter what life throws my way.

5. Navigating Life Confidently

Living confidently means embracing all aspects of who you are, including your past and your journey. It means acknowledging your struggles but not letting them define you. Instead, use them as stepping stones to greater things.

Here are a few practices that have helped me navigate life confidently:

Prayer and Meditation: Regularly connecting with God through prayer and meditation helps me stay centered and focused on His promises.

Self-Care: Prioritizing self-care is crucial. Whether it’s taking a walk, reading a book, or simply spending quiet time with God, self-care replenishes my spirit.

Community Support: Surrounding myself with supportive friends and family has been invaluable. We’re not meant to walk this journey alone, and having a strong support system makes a world of difference.

Positive Affirmations: Speaking positive affirmations over my life reinforces my confidence. Reminding myself of God’s truths daily strengthens my resolve.

Final ThoughtsMy journey from trauma to triumph is a testament to God’s unwavering love and the power of faith. Through every trial, He has been my rock and my guide, helping me build confidence and resilience. To anyone facing similar battles, know that you are not alone. With God’s help, you can overcome and live a life filled with purpose and confidence.

With love and confidence,

Carolyn "Confident" Lee
