Yesterday was the last day of school for the schools here in Maryland. Yay!!!! I looked at my news feed on all of my social media sites and just about all of them were last day of school photos of my friends’ kids or of them holding up a glass of an adult beverage exclaiming, “Finally! School is out! Let’s celebrate!” Being that I have two littles under the age of 5 and their preschool ended 3 weeks ago, so I didn’t have this amazing day to look forward to like all of my Facebook friends. However, this prompted reminiscing thoughts which in turn prompted a question I couldn’t resist asking my husband.

As an adult what do you look forward to?

I explained to him how I started to think about how it felt as a child in school, counting down the months, weeks, days, hours, and the minutes until Summer began. That feeling of happiness you get knowing that school is one less thing that you have to worry about was such a freeing feeling. So, when I asked him what do adult look forward to, he responded, “I don’t know, marriage and kids?” *cue the eye roll* Of course! We as adults should always look forward to marriage and the “fruits” of our labor, but what else? What if one never wants any of those commitments? So, I asked him again, “what else?” His response was, “death?” I’m amused, irritated, and sad at this point. Ok, as children we look forward to 3 day weekends, holidays breaks, Spring breaks, and Summer breaks, but as adults we look forward to marriage, kids, then death??? I feel like there should be more to life than that. Are you at work always watching the clock and waiting for the day to end just to be stuck in traffic, to come home, eat a mediocre dinner with a family who is always glued to their electronic devices and never speaking to each other? Are you a stay at home mom trying to keep your sanity, scrolling Facebook and learning how to be that perfect Pinterest mom, only to realize that you cannot do everything perfect and you may be a failure when it comes to baking that perfect unicorn cake that your daughter had to have. (because this has never happened to me) Is this all that there is to being an adult?

Life is short! I know every parent is happy that school is out and you don’t have to deal with the craziness of early morning school drop-offs, but I guarantee that in about a month or so, maybe less, this end of school year bliss will end and you’ll be ready for Fall again. So, I’m curious to know what do you as an adult look forward to? Please comment below.

  1. Buying a forever home; purchasing my dream car; retirement; kids growing up and starting college, getting married, and having children of their own.
